Different Tracer Gases Used For Leak Detection

A 5% hydrogen / 95% nitrogen mix is a safe, non-flammable, and highly accurate method for locating underground leaks. Hydrogen is the lightest element, making it easy for detectors to sense even in small amounts.

The gas rises in a straight column, not spreading out, which makes pinpointing leaks precise. It passes through soil, asphalt, and even concrete—though thick slabs may take up to a day to

Helium is another effective tracer gas for leak detection. Like hydrogen, it naturally rises, but it spreads out more, allowing detection over a wider area. This makes it ideal for large properties, where the gas can be picked up and then narrowed down with acoustic devices.

Also very useful for pool leak detection, since it can be easily sniffed at joints to quickly find the problem area. However,

While C02, Nitrogen, and Air are not directly detectable , they are still widely used in leak detection. When pressurized into a system, they create a higher-pitched sound that an acoustic leak finder can pick up more easily. This helps spread the sound of the leak and makes it more audible, even when it’s deep underground.

Each gas produces a slightly different tone, but all are much louder than w
